Patchwork motif
Patchwork is a living art, developing new techniques, forms and, above all, creativity. This style has no limits and allows you to create unique designs. Patchwork is perfect for creative fulfillment.
What is patchwork?
Patchwork is a textile technique in which small pieces of different materials are sewn together to form one whole. As a rule, these are fragments of fabrics with a triangular or square shape, creating an interesting, colorful ornament.
Where to use patchwork?
Patchwork is used for a variety of purposes. It is most often used in home textiles such as bedspreads, pillowcases or table runners. The method will also work for various types of accessories, e.g. bags, cosmetic bags, covers. Currently, you can find all kinds of patchwork-style items. Children's toys are a common product sewn using this technique. The motif also appears on clothing or exclusive interior design elements.
What materials can be combined?
Patchwork is there zero waste, leftover materials are most often used to make it. If we don't have scraps, we can easily combine all the materials we like the most. Cotton fabrics with a plain weave are the most comfortable to sew, but also wool, silk and linen. In this method, it is best to avoid very thin, flowing fabrics, but also thick and stiff ones. Sewing may be difficult and, in the case of thin fabrics, not durable. Synthetic and semi-synthetic fabrics are valued for their variety of colors.
Patchwork technique
Patchwork is an extremely original trend. The technique consists of three basic elements:
- Top – a composition of pieces of fabric sewn in a specific way
- Filling giving the effect of volume and softness
- Bottom – smooth fabric, usually in color matching the top
All elements are quilted and finished with aesthetic piping.
Accessories that will make patchwork sewing easier
The goal to success is to choose the right accessories that improve the aesthetics of the work and shorten the time it takes to complete it. Circular knives are a must-have - using them you can easily cut several layers of material with high precision and accuracy. Here, a backing mat will also come in handy as it protects the table and enables professional and even cutting in a short time. Preparing the patterns will be easier if you use a patchwork ruler. Additionally, you should equip yourself with ¼ edge feet, with top feed and for sewing in the piping.
Patchwork sewing
Step 1 – arrangement of pieces. The right design is the key to success.
Step 2 - properly arranged pieces of material should be cut so that they have even edges, then start stitching, taking into account the appropriate distance between them.
Step 3 - you need to put filler between the material that is to be the bottom layer and the top, then fold their edges twice and sew them precisely. The material of the trousers should be a few centimeters larger than the top.
Step 4 - for dessert there is quilting, which can be done in various ways, e.g. in the places where the pieces are joined.
If you are new to this technique, start with smaller forms. To start with, you can sew, for example, a pillow. The patchwork technique is considered difficult and complicated, but the effect rewards the work.
