How to sew a decorative pillowcase?
We women can spend a lot of time browsing the store shelves. The goal is to purchase the desired accessories, textiles and clothing. However, it is difficult to deny that we are most satisfied with a product created by ourselves, which 100% meets our expectations and reflects our character. From the article you will learn how to sew a decorative pillowcase.
Pillow material
What should you consider when choosing the material for a decorative pillow? The material should be soft and pleasant to the touch. It is important that it is flexible, this will help avoid unsightly creases. The fabric should be easy to clean, so it is worth choosing materials that can be washed in a washing machine or by hand. With such properties, the pillowcase will maintain its proper shape and size for a long time. In particular, we recommend satin, velour, checks, cotton or eco-leather.
What will we need?
The necessary accessories we need are: scissors, a tape measure, a cutting mat, pins, thread, soap or tailor's chalk and a stitching foot. A machine will also be useful, but we probably don't have to mention that.
How to sew a pillowcase?
If we already have a pillow that needs a pillowcase, let's measure it. For a 35 x 35 cm pillow, we need 95 x 37 cm of fabric. The longer side consists of the dimensions of the front of the pillow and the back of the pillow, with an allowance of 3 cm for the hem. The shorter one is the side of the pillow with a 1 cm allowance for the hem.
On the cut out fabric, mark 3 cm by ironing and fold the fabric up to 1 cm and 2 cm.
We insert pins to prevent the fabric from unwinding. Next, we sew using a regular presser foot.
We do the same on the other side. As a result, we have a nicely finished upper and lower side.
Now arrange the pillowcase, placing right sides together, into a 37 x 35 cm rectangle.
The remaining part of the fabric is a pleat, attach it with the right side up. We sew all layers together. Remember to set the appropriate stitch parameters. We change the classic stitch to a zigzag or overlock stitch.
Turn the pillow right side out. We can push out the cones using scissors.
Simple right?
You just need to do everything precisely and in the right order.
Time to decorate!
The pillowcase will accept anything, the only limit is your imagination. We can buy scraps of fabric, sequins, pompoms or anything else that comes to our mind.
Some inspirations:
1. Home-made fringes will be a stylish decoration. We recommend sewing them to the corners.
2. Sequins, diamonds, feathers, pearls - these are best attached with hot glue or thread.
3. We can make rosettes from scraps of fabric.
4. Pillow with pompoms – it not only sounds great, but also looks lovely!
5. There are templates available in haberdashery or interior decoration stores that will help with decorating. Apply the selected template to the pillowcase and paint it with special paint or fabric stamps.
