Schrunchie fashion
The ruffled hair band was an undeniable hit of the 80s and 90s. It was worn with high ponytails with backcombed bangs. Today, they are an inseparable element of ponytail hairstyles and romantic braids. Sometimes they are an attractive wrist decoration. They can beautifully complement the look of your styling. What's more, schrunchies can be zero waste!
How to sew a scrunchie elastic band?
Following the zero waste idea, we can use fabric scraps to create an elastic band. However, we know from experience that terry cloths may be the envy of our sister, daughter or friend. Therefore, it is worth purchasing appropriate material and sewing more of them. In addition to the fabric, you need to equip yourself with elastic, thread, scissors, needle and sewing machine . Although we can replace the machine with a hand sewing needle, the process will be slightly longer, but equally satisfying.
Method one:
First, prepare two rectangles measuring 10 cm by 30 cm. Next, fold the fabric in half, placing the elastic band at the edge. By deflecting the elastic band, we sew the edge of the fabric - freely, without stretching. Step by step, we place edge to edge and sew. This way we get a tunnel that we have to turn to the other side.
A safety pin comes to the rescue. Stuff it onto a piece of elastic and pull it through the fabric. We turn one of the open edges of the material inwards by about 1 cm, then we press one edge into the other. Place the elastic symmetrically and sew it.
Method two:
There is another, slightly simpler way to sew the elastic. For this we need one piece of fabric. Fold the material in half and sew it to create a tunnel. Using a safety pin, we pull the elastic band inside and securely tie the two ends. Sew the opening and it's ready!
Fabric selection
We choose the fabric according to our own preferences and skills. Schrunchies made of velor and slippery, flowing fabrics such as silk or satin look extremely attractive. Additionally, they do not damage hair. If we are in the beginner group, it will be easier if we choose a material that is not too thick and not elastic, e.g. cotton. It is also worth trying to choose decorative materials - eco-leather, checkered, embroidered or fur.
We can decorate the schrunchie with a ruffle or a long, decorative bow. We can sew beads onto the smooth fabric or finish it with special markers.
